How to Import Your LighterPack List Into a Mobile App (Link or CSV, Step by Step)

LighterPack has been the ultralight community's shared language since 2013. It's free, it's simple, and a lighterpack.com link is still instantly recognized in any gear thread on the internet. If your entire workflow is "plan on a desktop, share in forums," it continues to do that job.

What it doesn't do is come with you. There's no native app, no offline mode, and no checklist workflow — on packing night you're pinch-zooming a desktop layout on a phone screen. Method 1: Paste a Public Link (Fastest)

If your list has a public share URL — the kind you'd post in a shakedown thread — this is the one-minute path:

1. 1. Copy the share URL from lighterpack.com. It looks like lighterpack.com/r/abc123. Any list you can open in an incognito window will work.
2. 2. Open My Lists in MetaGear and tap the import icon in the header.
3. 3. Paste the link. MetaGear fetches the list and rebuilds it — categories in the same order, items with their weights and units, quantities, and worn/consumable flags exactly as you set them.

Method 2: Upload a CSV (Private Lists, Full Control)

For lists without a public link — or if you just prefer a file you can archive — use LighterPack's own CSV export:

1. 1. Export from lighterpack.com. Open your list while logged in and use the CSV export near the list title. The file contains one row per item: name, category, description, quantity, weight, unit, price, and worn/consumable markers.
2. 2. Get the file to your phone — AirDrop, Drive, email to yourself; any route works.
3. 3. Choose the CSV option on MetaGear's import screen and select the file. Review the result: units are converted correctly, and grams stay grams.

Edge Cases Worth Knowing

• Mixed units: lists that use ounces for some items and grams for others import correctly — each item keeps its own unit and the totals convert.
• Multiple lists: import each list separately. Items land in your Gear Locker, so gear shared between lists (that one tent in four setups) can be consolidated afterward.
• Zero-weight items: LighterPack lets you leave weights empty; those import as zero-weight and are easy to spot and fix — sort by weight and fill in the blanks.

Troubleshooting: When an Import Doesn't Look Right

• The link won't import. Check that it's the share URL (/r/…), not the editing URL from your logged-in dashboard. If the list is private, the link route can't see it — use the CSV route instead.
• Total weight looks different from LighterPack. Nine times out of ten it's a worn or consumable flag rendering differently in the totals, not a data problem. Compare the categories side by side; the mismatched item stands out immediately.
• Duplicate items after importing several lists. Expected: each list imports its own copy. Consolidate the duplicates in your Gear Locker once, and point every list at the surviving item — from then on, one item, many lists.
• A CSV edited in Excel fails to import. Excel loves to "help" by changing delimiters and encodings on save. Import the original file LighterPack produced; do your editing in MetaGear afterward, where units can't silently break.

Should You Keep LighterPack Too?

Sure — there's no exclusivity clause in backpacking. A common pattern during transition: old lighterpack.com links stay up because they're embedded in years of forum posts, while the living, updated version of your kit moves to your phone. Nothing breaks, nobody's bookmarks die, and after a season most people notice they simply stopped opening the old tab. The data made the decision for them.

After the Import: Three Upgrades Worth Ten Minutes

• Enrich items with Smart Search. Match imported items against the product database to pull in photos, current prices, and full specs. Your hand-measured weights stay untouched unless you choose otherwise — the database fills gaps, it doesn't overwrite your scale.
• Sanity-check the weight math. The imported list immediately shows base weight, pack weight, and trailhead weight plus a category treemap. If the number differs from what LighterPack showed, it's almost always a worn/consumable flag that was set inconsistently — two minutes to reconcile, and now both are honest.
